A t last, Summer is here. A time for long walks, bike rides, games of tennis, cricket, and all forms of outdoor leisure. Exposure to sunlight is thought to increase the brain’s release of a hormone called serotonin, this is associated with boosting mood. No wonder we feel invigorated and are so keen to get outside and enjoy the countryside or the beach.

Tell us about the range of sunglasses available at Ivan Cammack.
We have an excellent range of frames instore. Hugely popular Brands include Ray-Ban, Oakley, Maui Jim, Prada, Evil Eye and Radley.
I assume customers can simply walk in and purchase off the peg sunglasses.
Absolutely, yes. However, we would advise people to discuss frames with one of our Dispensing Opticians. We can help with fitting, what design suits your face shape, colouring and so on. Oh
and lenses.
What about the lenses?
All our lenses are excellent and made by Zeiss. They can be fitted in different colours. Brown gives you a warm view whilst grey or blue a cooler view for example.
Can you have prescription sunglasses?
Definitely. Many clients are still surprised by this. Varifocals are especially popular. You can sit by the pool reading your book and keep an eye on the kids over in the pool.
How important are sunglasses to the health of our eyes.
Very. We need effective protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Filtering out the UV rays reduces the risk of damage to our eyes and our eyelids.
Sunglasses really help and wraparound styles are particularly protective.
Is there a difference between tinted and polarized lenses?
Tinted lenses provide excellent UV protection, where polarized lenses do much more to combat glare. My husband described his vision through his polarized lenses as clearer and sharper.
Are some sunglasses better suited to people playing sport?
Oakley and Maui Jim are probably best known for sports sunglasses, but all brands work well. I have had clients requesting certain designs. A cyclist loves his lenses that go from dark to clear when he rides through a tunnel. Cyclists and motorbike enthusiasts love a pair that’s light but durable and fits comfortably under a helmet.
For those who play sports such as tennis, the correct fit is important.
Do you have a favourite pair of sunglasses, Kayleigh?
I do. Prada. We have a new range recently introduced and I love them.
Have you seen a recent trend towards a particular brand?
No, but I have towards lenses. Mirrored lenses are particularly popular with men, whereas lenses that have a graduated tint from dark down to light are popular with women, as they give the frame a more feminine appearance.
