This Autumn you can see the latest Firehorse creations at two of Golf’s most prestigious events, the Solheim Cup and the Ryder Cup. So what was the inspiration behind these most recent designs?

The venues for both competitions were the inspiration and a celebration of these stunning Spanish and Italian regions.

For the Solheim Cup, the design is a celebration of Andalucía, a treasure trove of delights, just like the region that inspired it. The design showcases a myriad of imagery typically associated with the area, including the Mezquita Mosque, the Ronda bridge, a white-washed village, flamenco culture (Spanish fan and guitar) and a dove providing a subtle nod to Picasso’s world-famous art. Looking closely, you will see the gastronomy of the region reflected in Spanish Jerez, fruits, spices and fish with fine illustrations of oranges, almonds, olives, cumin, pomegranate, quince, nutmeg and saffron, also mackerel, prawns, lobster and grouper fish. Native Andalucían wildflowers, including winter clematis, wild tulips, periwinkles, scented jonquils, wild gladioli and giant orchids, are also woven throughout the design and the muted blue waves allude to Andalucía’s beautiful coasts, bathed by both the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans. Finally, there is of course a reference to the golfing heritage of Andalucía, the most visited golf destination in Europe.

The ‘sun-baked’ colour palette is soft and understated, echoing the built and natural landscape. Warm neutrals, peaches and red clay tones are fused with Artisan’s Gold and orange highlights, soothing hints of lavender, blue and muted greens. Designed to have a feeling of warmth and these colours inspire you to lean in and immerse yourself in the Spanish sunshine!

For the Ryder Cup, the design showcases iconic imagery associated with Italy and Rome including the Vatican, the Sistine chapel (the shapes that make up the base of the composition are also taken from the ceiling of the Chapel), the Colosseum, the Rialto bridge, a gondola, a Venetian mask, white lilies (the national flower of Italy), pasta (the wavy lines are spaghetti), olive branches, vine tomatoes and lemons. The central circle is inspired by geometric Italian tiles and also represents the Italian sunshine!

The design is presented in two colourways: ‘Sophisticated’, inspired by the Ryder Cup brand palette of blues and golds, and ‘Italy’ featuring the red, green and white colours of the Italian flag. Firehorse designer Rachel explains: “Colour is absolutely key in this design, I wanted everything to feel like it was drenched in Italian sunshine. Warm orange tones are carried through both colourways and provide a beautiful contrast with the rest of the palette. ‘Italy’ includes a rich ganache brown and beach glass blue that really make the rest of the design sing. The Sophisticated version features a rich sapphire blue and soft grey tones with a vibrant atoll blue to inject energy.”

In summary, ‘Celebration of Italy’ and ‘Celebration of Andalucía’ have been designed as stunning pieces of limited-edition art which become ‘collectables’ to celebrate and commemorate the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup in 2023.
